UWA Student Chapter of the
Mathematical Association of America (SCMAA)
The Mathematical
Association of America (MAA) is the largest
professional society of college and university
mathematics teachers in the world, with a membership of
30,000, including students and teachers. The original
1915 charter of the MAA declared that the purpose of the
Association is to "assist in promoting the interest
of mathematics in America, especially in the collegiate
field." That charter still shapes MAA's mission,
which is to advance the mathematical sciences, especially
at the collegiate level. The goals of MAA activities are:
education, professional development, students, and public
policy.
The MAA Student Chapters program is designed to
encourage students to continue study in the mathematical
sciences, provide opportunity to meet with other students
interested in mathematics, interact with prominent
mathematicians at national meetings, and provide career
information in the mathematical sciences. Included with
these benefits is a subscription to a mathematical
journal published by the MAA.
An award is presented each year to the junior or
senior member of the UWA SCMAA who has the highest
overall GPA. This award is presented at Honors Day in
Spring quarter.
